UK2026-09-14 15:36:34UK FCA Opens Consultation on Tokenised Gold Rules With Responses Due Oct. 23The UK Financial Conduct Authority has launched a consultation on tokenised gold, asking whether the structure could improve how gold is traded, transferred, pledged, and held in the country’s wholesale markets. Responses are open until Oct. 23. At the center of the paper is a regulatory classification issue: whether a digitally transferable token backed by physical gold should be treated as a Collective Investment Scheme or an Alternative Investment Fund. That distinction would determine whether the product must comply with the full set of fund rules, a point the FCA said could affect whether such products can come to market at all. The regulator said it may respond to consultation feedback by issuing guidance or by creating a dedicated framework for tokenised gold. The move follows a separate joint consultation published in May by the FCA and the Bank of England on the future of tokenisation in UK wholesale financial markets, where respondents specifically raised gold as a topic. The FCA also published feedback statement FS26/1 on the same day and said it plans to release a broader tokenisation roadmap later this year, followed by a consultation in the first half of 2027 on custody rules for Relevant Specified Investment Cryptoassets, or RSICs.990
tokenised gol2026-08-11 06:40:52UK's FCA explores tokenised gold for wholesale marketsThe UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is currently exploring how tokenised gold could be brought into wholesale markets, with one of the main questions being whether such assets can serve as collateral. The regulatory work is directed at institutional market participation, and any resulting rules may be made public in the coming months. This review arrives as London seeks to consolidate its standing as the world's leading venue for gold trading. Figures from the World Gold Council indicate that London handles approximately 70 percent of global gold trading volume, while Shanghai and Hong Kong are increasingly competing for a larger share of wholesale bullion business. HSBC, for its part, introduced a tokenised gold offering for retail clients in Hong Kong more than two years ago. The bank has reported cumulative transaction value exceeding $2.2 billion, spread across more than 276,000 individual transactions. The FCA's remit does not extend to direct oversight of physical gold trading. Instead, its supervision applies to gold derivatives and to exchange-traded products listed on public markets.1880
